Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai

רבי שמעון בר יוחאי

Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai, the saintly Tanna of the mishnaic period and author of the Holy Zohar, was a disciple of Rabbi Akiva. Rabbi Akiva was put to death by the Romans for studying Torah. Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai, who attacked the Romans for their cruelty and evil, was himself condemned to death.

Together with his son Rabbi Elazar, he went into hiding in a cave in the mountains near Peki'in in the Galilee, where they stayed for 13 years. The Talmud in Shabbat 33b relates that a miracle occurred and a carob tree and a well of water were created for them, to provide them with food and water. They were often visited in the cave, by Elijah the Prophet and Moses who taught them the deepest secrets of the Torah. During their 13 years in seclusion, R' Shimon wrote the holy Zohar, which forms the basis of Kabbalah.

Rabbi Yitzchak Luria

רבי יצחק לוריא

Reverently known as Ari HaKadosh, the holy Ari. The name Ari is an acronym for Eloki Rabbi Yitzchak. Others say it stood for Lion, for he was the lion of his generation.

"Our Master said that at the point where philosophy ends Kabbalah begins. And, at the point where the Kabalistic teachings of the Ramak end, the teachings of the Ari begin." R' Chaim of Volozhin wrote the above words in the name of his teacher, the Gaon of Vilna.

He lost his father (Shlomo) at a very young age and his mother was forced to move with the family to Egypt where their rich uncle Rabbi Moshe Francis supported the family and took care of all their needs as a truly devoted father. If fact, the Ari married his uncle's daughter-his cousin.

The Rambam - Maimonadies

הרמב''ם -רבי משה בן מימון

Popularly known as Rambam (after the initials of his name) and Maimonides (Greek for "son of Maimon"). Halachist, commentator, philosopher.

The Rambam's soul was from a very high level. In Shaar HaGilgulim (hakdama 36) of Rabbi Yitzchak Luria, the ARI he states, "The Rambam is from the left sideburn, therefore he did not merit to know the wisdom of the Zohar, but the Ramban (Rabbi Moshe ben Nachman 1195-1270) is from the right sideburn and therefore he merited to know the wisdom of the Zohar.

Rambam received his first Torah instruction from his father, a noted scholar who traced his ancestry back to Rabbi Yehudah HaNasi, compiler of the Misnah, and King David. When he was 13, Cordova was conquered by the invading Almohads, a fanatical Moslem sect. The family was forced to flee, wandering from place to place, ultimately settling in Fez, Morocco. In 1165 Rambam settled in Cairo, where he found asylum and religious freedom.

Yosef HaTzaddik

יוסף הצדיק

Yosef was of the 12 sons of Yaakov Avinu, and became a chariot (merkavah) for the sefirah of Yesod.
Yosef was the son of Yaakov Avinu (Jacob the Patriarch) and Rachel Imeinu.
Yaakov took the birthright away from Reuben and gave it to Yosef. It was suitable for the birthright to come from Rachel. (Bava Batra 86:6, 123a).

Ruach HaKodesh (Divine Inspiration) rested on Yosef from his youth until his dying day, guiding him in all matters of wisdom (Pirkei d'Rabbi Eliezer 39).

When Yosef went out to rule over Egypt, the daughters of kings would peek out of the lattices and pelt him with jewelry and rings so that he would look at them - but he did not look (Bereishit Rabbah 98:18). Every day he saw daughters of kings - sometimes adorned, sometimes perfumed, sometimes unclothed - but he did not allow himself to be tempted (Yalkut Shimoni, Vayeshev 145).

After being sold by his brothers, he ended up in Egypt. He worked at the house of Potiphar. Potiphar's wife tried everyday to seduce him, but he refused again and again to surrender to her.
